Useful hints for travellers visiting Zakynthos

A trip by boat around the island needs ~9 hours (depending on the cruise boat) and your guide like very much to sell these trips for a lot of money (in 2001 ~25$ per person). These trips containing normally the shuttle service from your hotel to the port and the return. For the half price you will buy the boat ticket in the port. From 2 persons up it is much more economic, also in case using a cab. You have to be in the port at 9 a clock in the morning and then you can take the boat that you like. Small groups should ask for a better rate.
A good solution is to take one of the smaller boats from Agios Nicolas, Koroni or Porto Vromi. You don't lose the whole day and you can avoid the Shipwreck-Bay rush hour between 11.30 - 13.30 in the high season, when the beach is filled with more than 1000 peoples from the cruise boats. Western winds up to 5 Beaufort make landing/embarking in the Shipwreck-Bay impossible.

Buy your map on the island, it's cheaper.

Watch your steps in the Zakynthian traffic, because
some smaller roads are not in the same good condition like the main roads are. The surface becomes slippery from oil, sand and salt - so take care, especially in case you're driving a bike.
